Chatea Grezan St. Jean is a unique Art & Culture center in south France. Selfsustainable community, events and art.

ABOUT

Château St. Jean Art & Culture in the Béziers–Montpellier region is a remnant of the booming wine production period in the 19th century. Several of these "Wine Castles" still exist today in this extraordinary and historical part of southern France.

Maybe it's the long history of the place which provides Château St. Jean with its own particular air of wonder and mystery. The grounds were once home to Roman merchants, pilgrims on route to Compostelle and later, one of three commanderies the Knights Templar maintained in this part of France, before it became property of the Hospitaliers of St. Jean of Jérusalem. Its original walls had long fallen into decay until the 1820's when reconstruction of what is known as Château St. Jean today began.

Over the years, with its eclectic architectural style, Château St. Jean has hosted guests from all over the world. The Art & Culture Centre includes a venue for events seating up to 100 people and a 120m2 exhibition room.

Hans H. Schellenberg
Hans H. Schellenberg

The idea of creating a Culture & Art community, together with his long time friend Katarina Orvedal, became a vision back in the 1990’s when H.H.S. was living in Stockholm. It took many years and many turns, when finally in 2011 the two decided to visit a friend who owned an old fortress in Langeudoc near Béziers, France. “We both fell in love with this historic part of Southern France and knew that we finally found the region where we wanted to be.” And in less than a year, in the spring of 2012, they discovered Château St. Jean.

For many years Hans has worked as an independent cameraman, editor and producer on a wide spectrum of film and video productions. From industrial, commercial, and documentary to drama, portraits about artists and films for humanitarian and environmental causes.

Katarina grew up in Stockholm - Sweden. As a young woman she learnt the art of capturing still images while working as an assistant to a renowned fashion photographer. With her portfolio she applied to the Museum of Fine Arts School in Boston. There she developed her photography and explored other art forms. Through Hans-H. Schellenberg Katarina became involved with commercial, documentary, and fiction film making, in which she has been active both in front and behind the camera.

Her passion and inspiration is also to work with people. From 1994 to 1998 Katarina trained as a Transpersonal Psychotherapist and ran her own practice. Later on her interests in theology and mysticism took her to Lund University. Katarina’s life partner for 20 years - Hans Zingmark with whom she has two children - shares her passion for art and culture. As a working medical doctor Hans is also trained in Transpersonal Psychology.

Through the creation of this Culture and Art Centre Katarina will share her wealth of experience and skills - providing an intimate space for personal development where visitors can experience therapy courses, art workshops and enjoy exhibitions.
